Background of the Study
Political patronage refers to the practice of giving government jobs, services, or resources to political supporters in exchange for political loyalty and votes. In Funtua Local Government Area (LGA) of Katsina State, political patronage plays a central role in local governance, influencing political behavior, public service distribution, and electoral outcomes. Patronage networks often operate within party structures, with political elites using patronage to secure loyalty, mobilize support, and maintain power (Adebayo & Sani, 2023).
While patronage is a common feature of Nigerian politics, its effects on governance and the development of local communities are under-researched. This study will examine how political patronage shapes decision-making processes, resource allocation, and political loyalty in Funtua LGA. By focusing on patronage practices, this research will contribute to understanding the dynamics of local governance and its impact on development in Northern Nigeria (Mamman & Hassan, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Political patronage is a deeply embedded practice in Nigerian politics, but its implications for local governance and political stability in Funtua LGA remain inadequately studied. There is a need to assess how patronage systems affect governance, service delivery, and public trust in the political system. This study will explore how political patronage operates in Funtua and its impact on governance outcomes and public perceptions of the political process.

1.6 Significance of the Study

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on political patronage in Funtua LGA, Katsina State, during the 2023 general elections. Limitations include challenges related to access to sensitive data on patronage networks and the potential biases of respondents who may be hesitant to speak openly about patronage practices.
